Wow! Just when I thought I had come up with some basic ideas for #printmarketing (and believe me, there are more ideas than the ones I wrote about), another GREAT idea hit me in the face (well, not literally).
ENTER YOU WORK INTO COMPETITION
Entering your printed work into competition is a fantastic way to market your print company. There are several ways to enter work into competition, the most well-known and respected being the Printing Industries of America “Benny Award”, named after Benjamin Franklin. This award is a national award, given out during Graph Expo in Chicago. Usually, printing companies enter in their local PIA chapters, and winners from there are automatically entered into the national competition. Awards can be used as a way to promote your company’s artistic skills, as well as give validation as a premier printer. If you enter competition regularly, in both local and national PIA chapters, you can create a branded document highlighting these achievements, which can be emailed, or printed out to included in your promotional packets. In addition, many of the paper mills have competitions, which obviously require that you print on a specific manufacturer’s paper in order to enter. These competitions, too, can be valuable in boosting your print company’s stature or authority.
Also, competitions allow you as an owner to get out of the office – to mingle with other printers and print suppliers and network. Printers, while competitors for work, still have a tight-knit social order that allows for interchange of non-proprietary ideas. So, even entering just to be sharing the floor with a printer from a different geographic region can be beneficial.
One final word about competitions, and it really is not about print marketing. When you win, you can share the good vibes with your production team. Let’s face it: it was THEIR hard work that won the award. Giving the team kudos for a job well done goes a long way to enhancing employee morale.
